I was a graphic designer for 7 years before transitioning to mobile development. The visual aspect of mobile apps appealed to me, and I wanted to build the interfaces I was designing.
Started with basic web development, then moved to React Native. My design background helped me understand user experience, which many developers overlook.
The biggest challenge was learning computer science fundamentals while working full-time. I spent two years doing online courses, building apps, and contributing to open source projects.
The job search was long because I was picky about finding a role where my design skills were valued alongside my coding abilities. Eventually found a startup that needed someone who could wear both hats.
On the interview
Design + development interviews. Started with portfolio review, then mobile-specific coding challenges, and finally collaborative design/development exercises.
If you have design skills, don't abandon them when learning to code. The combination of design and development skills makes you incredibly valuable.
